Window Coverings
Window coverings from Mielke Brothers add privacy and filter out light, especially in the early morning when you might want to be sleeping. They can also add a layer of insulation to your windows by helping to block the heat from the sun or preventing cold drafts from entering the room. Window coverings can add style to a room by adding a pop of color and texture to the walls or provide a neutral foundation if you want the flexibility to change out your color palette.
There are four primary types of window coverings, all of which you can get from us:
Drapes
- Single fabric panels or pairs that are lined and often designed to block out light, making them a good option in the bedroom for daytime sleepers or in your favorite room to watch movies.
- Usually made with heavy fabrics with pleats that typically give them a formal appearance.
- Help to insulate a room in the colder months.
- Often opened and closed using cords that move the drapes with pulleys.
- Typically hang past the windowsill to the floor.
- Available custom made through Mielke Brothers using your choice of home decorator fabric.
Blinds
- A system of slats made of wood, bamboo, aluminum, or vinyl. Light or privacy is determined by adjusting the tilt of the slats or by raising or lowering the entire blind.
- Do a good job of blocking out light, making them a good choice for the bedroom.
- Often paired with curtains or a valance to soften their linear appearance.
- Typically have horizontal slats, but large blinds with hanging vertical slats work well to cover large windows or sliding glass doors.
- Available through Mielke Brothers from Hunter Douglas from a variety of materials in a variety of styles.
Valances
- Ideal for hiding the hardware of other treatments such as shades or blinds.
- Add softness, color, texture, and architectural interest to windows.
- Can be used alone or layered over other treatments.
- Custom made in your choice of a variety of beautiful fabric colors, styles, and textures.
Shades
- Fabric panels that are held in place with a rod or frame at the upper edge.
- Open with a cord, roller, or lifting mechanism that rolls or bunches the fabric, depending on the style.
- Can provide a pop of color or texture on their own or blend with the wall when used with curtains or valances.
- Available through Mielke Brothers from Hunter Douglas or custom made using your choice of home decorator fabric.
